Learn about Endpaper

Image

What is endpaper?

An endpaper (or endsheet, endleaves) is the material linking a book block and its hard cover case. They are the first and last two pages of a book, usually left blank. In the above photo, the endpaper are marked in teal (dark green/blue). The most sophisticated form of endsheets are combined endsheets with a backing material (a form of folded endsheets). They consist of double, folded endsheets hinged with a cambric-cotton fabric. These are ready to be used in the cover feeder of a perfect binder.

Why use endpaper?

Endpaper ensures the durability of a book as it links cover and book sheets thereby stabilizing the whole construction. It is an integral part of every hardcover book and therefore also a visual element. False endsheets try to imitate this look, but fail to provide sufficient support which often results in books falling apart.

Who uses endpaper?

Anyone producing hardcover books should use some kind of endpaper solution to link their book block and case. Combined endsheets like our PräziCover are ideal for one-off and short-run production of hardcover books such as book-on-demand and photo books.

Fake vs. Real Endpaper

Many producers struggling with hardcover book stability and durability are not using endpaper at all, but try to fake the look of endpaper. This can easily be spotted when the first pages of a book.

Fake Endpaper

Fake endpaper is only connected to the book pages in the spine. This can be seen on the two photos. The endpaper is not attached to the first page and therefore arching away from it. It is only attached to the endpaper linked to the book cover. This creates a predetermined breaking point between endpaper and the first page of the book.

Real Endpaper

Real endpaper on the other hand, is connected to the entire book block with the first page of the book. As shown, not just the first page moves with the endpaper, but the first couple of pages are lifted. There is no predetermined breaking point and stability for the whole construction is provided.

Result: With PräziCover and PräziTab you produce a perfect hardcover book with "real" folded endsheets in publisher quality!

In the following video, this process can be seen in a real production environment. A perfect binder is used to apply a combined endsheet (PräziCover) to loose sheets, creating a book block that may then be cased into a book cover to make a hardcover book. As you can see, our combined endsheet behaves like a softcover and may therefore be processed with any other perfect binder able to bind softcover books.
